Abstract

In Western Orientalism, there are two large schools with historical traditions that have made a great contribution to the development of the Central Asian direction: these are the Soviet-Russian and French schools. The French school of Central Asian studies was inferior to Soviet-Russian due to objective reasons such as limited access to the area, low resource availability and a narrow range of subjects. Only by the 1980s, French researchers, in collaboration with Soviet colleagues, had some opportunity to directly study the region. Often, French researchers were enthusiasts with scarce resources and no help from the French official authorities. For comparison: Soviet archeology in Central Asia was a state institution in which large collectives participated, using a wide variety of methods and means.
