Abstract

The article provides an in-depth analysis of Sadeddin Taftazani’s philosophical and ethical views on kalom (a popular speculative discipline of the medieval Muslim literature that provides any reasoning on religious and philosophical topics) on the basis of rational thinking. In particular, it aims at looking through one of the important issues of kalom philosophy – freedom of will and ethical (moral) choice of man which are widely discussed in the work “Sharh al-Aqeed” written by the great thinker.

In his work Taftazani describes such features of the Creator as kindness and good deeds which originally appeared from His creativity and instructs people to refrain from various actions that may occur due to undesirable human behavior.

The article analyzes the conceptual ideas and views on freedom of will and ethical (moral) choice of man as the most principle issues in the spiritual heritage of the outstanding thinker on the basis of philosophy of time and space. To be specific, the thinker considers the inadequacy of sin and apostasy as the features of disrespectful behavior and social morality. Also, a set of religious and moral guidelines for testing people through their actions that are prohibited by social moral norms have been substantiated on the basis of intellectual and metaphorical sources.

In his work, Sadeddin Taftazani with great mastery expressed that the Creator has always commanded the human community to do only good deeds, to be abstinent form forbidden deeds, and has kept man's freedom in accordance with moral criteria such as obedience or disobedience to Shari'ah commands.

The research discusses the harmony and disproportions in modern philosophy with the philosophical views of the thinker Taftazani in the management of human destiny and freedom of will. Particularly, it thoroughly compares the notions voluntarism and fatalism existing in modern philosophical terminology with Taftazani’s views on the issue of freedom of will and moral choice. The study also provides a comparative analysis of the interrelationships and differences between the views of European philosophers on the subject and Taftazani’s ideas.

To take into consideration the human choice it can be equally important for the spiritual life and the development of the society and it is constructively essential that this choice serves not only the interests of the individuals, but also the interests of humanity as a whole.

We have tried to express our views on the issue of freedom of will and ethical (moral) choice using the copy of “Sharh al-Aqeed” published in Great Britain.
