The Light of Islam

Abstract

The role of hadiths in Islamic teachings and the virtue of passing them on to others have led Muslims to concentrate on memorizing, collecting and presenting them to the next generation. Because of the emergence of various religious and political groups, the spread of Islam among different countries, nationalities and religions, different cultures began investigating its narrators before accepting any reports from the Prophet.

Muhaddiths have put a number of conditions on hadiths to make them authentic. Works on the authenticity of the chain of the narrators have started. Uninterruptedness (ittisal as-sanad) one of the first and utmost important conditions.

Muhaddiths did not agree in the narration that if it was narrated by a person above him with the word “’an” (from), his narration would be considered as uninterrupted (muttasil). In particular, some scholars, such as Imam Bukhari, have a strong view on this issue in the “‘mu’an’an” narrative, saying that the narrators were contemporary with the person they narrate and had the opportunity to meet. In order to be “isnad” the terms such as “I’ve heard” or “told me” must be used. Imam Bukhari has used several terms in al-Tarih al-Kabir for the term ‘ittisal al-sanad’, among which the terms ‘sami’a,’ ‘an’, ‘adraka’, ‘ra’a’ and ‘lakhiya’ have special meanings. The article explains the specific methodology of the scholar to use these terms.
