This article sets forth the concepts of «freedom of conscience,» the historical development of a phenomenon, and the views expressed by philosophers at different times. It was also comparatively studied with a number of legal documents and its practical application in public life. In addition, the importance of freedom of conscience as a philosophical category in social development is emphasized. Models addressing the issues of freedom of conscience used in secular societies are different from models where a certain religion is recognized as a state religion. Every society perceives freedom of conscience and religious freedom in close connection with its past. Freedom of conscience is officially recognized on the basis of the state constitution and special legal documents. However, its full-fledged functioning is inextricably linked with legal awareness and a culture of society based on effective state guarantees. This article is based on the above analysis, describing the theoretical analysis and conclusions about freedom of conscience and their interaction with the process of secularization.
